How Massachusetts Calculates Child Support
Massachusetts calculates child support using the Income Shares Model as defined in the Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines, which were reformed in 2021. Both parents' incomes are combined to determine the total support obligation from the state schedule, then each parent's share is allocated proportionally based on their percentage of the combined income.
The 2021 reform moved Massachusetts from a percentage-based model to an Income Shares approach, creating a more equitable system. The calculation begins by determining each parent's monthly income from all sources. These incomes are combined, and the state schedule is used to find the basic support obligation. Health insurance premiums and childcare costs are added, and adjustments are made for reciprocal support orders, college contributions (through age 23), and the self-support reserve of $1,287 per month.
Massachusetts has one of the highest self-support reserves among states, reflecting its higher cost of living. The court also specifically considers the cost of adding children to health insurance when determining the support obligation.
